Claire's Story
Hello, I'm Claire Attley, owner of The Barrington Guest House since 2018.

My journey to The Barrington wasn't a straight path. After years in a corporate career, I realised something was missing - that personal connection and the satisfaction of creating experiences people truly remember. I'd always loved Scarborough, having visited since childhood, and when I saw this beautiful Georgian building in the Old Town, I knew it was my chance to create something special.
I wanted to offer something different from the standard seaside B&B - boutique rooms with character in a historic building, but with all the modern comforts guests expect. Most importantly, I wanted to create a place where people feel genuinely welcome, not just another anonymous hotel room.
Since opening in 2018, I've welcomed guests from across the UK and around the world. Many return year after year, which is the greatest compliment I could receive. I've made wonderful friends along the way and take pride in being part of so many happy Scarborough memories.
Our Beautiful Building
The Barrington is housed in a Georgian building dating back to the 18th century, when Scarborough was establishing itself as one of Britain's first seaside resorts. If these walls could talk, they'd tell tales of 300 years of visitors coming to enjoy Scarborough's sea air and attractions.
The building retains many original Georgian features that give it such unique character:
- Beautiful wood panelling in Room 1
- Original Georgian windows with sea glimpses
- Period fireplaces (now decorative)
- Characterful staircases and landings
- High ceilings with original cornicing
Perhaps our most unusual feature is the Georgian ship's mast in Room 15, salvaged from a 1700s shipwreck and incorporated into the building. It's a fascinating piece of maritime history that our guests love.
While I've carefully preserved these historic elements, I've also ensured modern comforts throughout - powerful showers, comfortable beds, Smart TVs, and reliable Wi-Fi. It's this blend of character and comfort that makes The Barrington special.

Today, The Barrington offers nine individually styled rooms, from our signature four-poster boutique rooms to our unique family accommodation. We welcome couples, families, solo travellers and business guests throughout the year.
Our perfect location in Scarborough's Old Town puts you just one minute from South Bay beach and within easy walking distance of all major attractions. Many guests tell me they park their car on arrival and don't use it again until they leave - everything you need is within walking distance.
